Description
Looking south towards Sausalito, California, circa 1900, a narrow gauge steam train on the North Pacific Coast (NPC) Railroad approaches Pine Point, once named Alameda Point. The NPC's repair shops can been seen in the upper right corner. The tracks in the lower right corner have exited the shops and are returning to the mail line, which continued to Mill Valley and points north. The railroad was inaugurated in 1875 and carried redwood lumber, local dairy and agricultural products, express cars and passengers. It operated almost 93 miles of track that extended from a pier in Sausalito (which connected the line via ferry to San Francisco), northwest to Cazadero. In 1902, it was sold to the North Shore Railroad, then in 1907 became part of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. During WWII, the body of water on the right was filled in for the creation of the Marinship shipyard. Marinship workers built ninety three ships for the war effort.
