Description
The men and equipment of Turlock's volunteer fire department participated in the parade of the 1912 Melon Carnival. Directly behind the flag draped automobile is the horse drawn pumper used to pump water to fight fires. At the end of the row of firemen is a two wheeler with the hose wrapped around the center section. The first fire fighting volunteer company organized in 1907. A wooden tower with an alarm bell mounted on top was built next to Main Street by the railroad tracks. Water wells were then drilled in five locations throughout the business district.
