Description
The commercial development of Turlock began with a general store, in 1871, that sold a wide variety of merchandise, from canned food to farm equipment. It sometimes served as a bank, and the primary customers were farmers. Over time the businesses grew more specialized as can be seen in this photograph. Note the angled parking of the cars that was a hold over from the use of horses to ride and to pull wagons. The horses' reins were secured which meant their heads faced the building and therefore wagons angled out into the street.
