Description
Between November 1972 and July 1974, anthropologist Joan Larcom was in these islands for dissertation research. This earlier fieldwork hardly prepared her for the large changes that startled her when in 1981 she returned to Port Vila and Wintua on SouthWest Bay, Malakula. In this photograph taken in 1981 she talks with former Assessor Sale, appointed by the British District Agent at Norsup in the 1970's to deal with legal cases between the Agent's visits which occurred monthly or even less often. It was Sale's job to decide which cases to adjudicate himself and which legal cases should wait for 'han blong Mastah' (the Master/Agent's hand).
