Description
In 1886 lithographer and publisher Louis Prang (1824-1909) of L. Prang & Co. in Boston began publication of a series of 18 chromolithographs depicting battles of the Civil War. Prang commissioned military artist Thure de Thulstrup to create paintings of 12 land battles—6 in the eastern theater and 6 in the West. The works were carefully researched for accuracy, and a pamphlet describing each battle was prepared to accompany each scene. The paintings were then represented in chromolithographs and issued, with the pamphlets, individually or as a complete portfolio. Captioned from image card: Battle of Spotsylvania. May 8 to 21, 1864 Copyright 1887 by L. Prang & Co., Boston Text from negative sleeve: Art, paintings. Civil War.
