Description
"Rumford Baking Powder," an aluminum-free baking powder still sold today, is the direct descendant of "Professor Horsford's Phosphatic Baking Powder."
Original trade card forms part of: Collection no. 311, History & Special Collections for the Sciences, Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library, UCLA.
Sepia-toned image on front of card depicts a baby sitting propped up against a fabric and lace covered backing. The baby is holding a small label reading Prof. Horsford's Baking Powder. The text on the back of the card indicates that the Baking Powder was used in cooking, and claims that it treats phosphate deficiency which could lead to disease and growth retardation.
Additional text from card: Made from Prof. Horsford's Acid Phosphate. Recommended by leading physicians. Makes lighter biscuit, cakes, etc., and is healthier than ordinary baking powder...This baking powder restores the phosphates lost with the bran, in bolting fine flour, which are indispensable in the maintenance of health. A deficiency of the phosphates is a common cause of disease and of retarded growth...
