Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Francis J. Verhaeren, hotel man, sits at the plaintiff's table during his civil trail. He accused wealthy retired chemical engineer R. H. Semple of slandering him during a dinner party. Verhaeren lost the case. The alleged slander occurred when a actress Louise Mitchell announced that she had lost her $10,000 engagement ring. Verhaeren claimed Semple accused him of stealing the ring, which was later found. Semple countered he had only been telling a joke. The judge agreed with Semple. A different photograph of Francis J. Verhaeren take on the same occasion appears with the article, "Redress Denied In Slander Suit; Court Orders Verdict for Semple, Defendant., Los Angeles Times, 20 Oct, 1932: A2. Handwritten on negative: Francis J. Verhaeren Text from negative sleeve: Verhaeren, Francis J., 1931
