Francis J. Verhaeren, hotel man, sits at the plaintiff's table during his civil trail. He accused wealthy retired chemical engineer R. H. Semple of slandering him during a dinner party. Verhaeren lost the case.
The alleged slander occurred when a actress Louise Mitchell announced that she had lost her $10,000 engagement ring. Verhaeren claimed Semple accused him of stealing the ring, which was later found. Semple countered he had only been telling a joke. The judge agreed with Semple.
A different photograph of Francis J. Verhaeren take on the same occasion appears with the article, "Redress Denied In Slander Suit; Court Orders Verdict for Semple, Defendant., Los Angeles Times, 20 Oct, 1932: A2.
