Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. A blurry photograph of Minnie West, John Lemberger and three others standing in a row around the water pump at the Miller home. The man at center stands slightly elevated from everyone else and holds the handle of the water pump. A fence runs across the foreground of the image. The group stands in the distance behind it. The house (partial view) stands at right; a fence runs in front of it. In the distance at left, a barn stands. Text from negative sleeve: 482. Germanville, Iowa. October 1900. [handwritten: checkmark] Mother and Uncle John Lemberger, mother's brother, by the pump. Other unknown. Think this is the Miller home. The log cabin shown here is all that remains of the original home of the Lembergers in Germanville - or on a farm close by. Mother told me once that her father was about the only one of the men at Germanville who could read English, and that when he would get a newspaper, he would mount a stump of a tree and read it to the assembled neighbors. 3 x [2 crossed out] 3 negatives
