Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of a stretch of railroad tracks for the Southern Pacific Railroad running between Beaumont and Indio near Whitewater. The tracks extend from the bottom center and up through the middle of the image where they veer left and disappear near the horizon. A small railroad stop (partial view) stands on the left edge of the image; its shadow extends toward the tracks. Behind it, there stands a mileage post. The tracks are surrounded by a desert that extends towards low mountains in the far distance at right. Text from negative sleeve: 601. Whitewater, Calif. 1899. Southern Pacific Investigation trip. The track between Beaumont and Indio. Freight trains coming west up the hill to Beaumont. Smoke can be seen from the head engine and the helper on the rear. 3 negatives.
