Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of H. H. West's Buick traveling along a snowy road and approaching a railroad crossing near Donner Summit. The car (partial view) is at the far right of the photograph. It is viewed from the rear as it travels towards the crossing in the distance. Half the car extends beyond the frame. Its license plate reads, "CAL 288 467." The road stretches out ahead of the car from the lower right corner up towards the center of the image. A few signs line the road. The sign at left reads, "GOODRICH RAILROAD TIRES." The sign at right is a railroad crossing sign. Further down the road, at right, another sign reads, "STOP CARS." The road inclines as it approaches the crossing. Railroad snow sheds run elevated above the road to the right and are parallel with it towards the crossing. To the left of the crossing, the snow shed extends to the left and into the distance. Text from negative sleeve: 1059. Trinity County trip, 1917. Summit, Calif. Between Donner Lake and Cisco. The garage man at Reno warned us against trying to go over the summit. Said we could not make it. I left Donner Lake with the old Buick and 20 minutes later took the first picture on the grade close to the summit in the snow sheds. 1. The Buick close to the summit. 2. The Buick just ready to slide over the summit and thru the snow shed. Note the crossing bell at left. The opening was thru the snow shed and across the tracks. Sure dangerous xg. 2 films
