According to the negative sleeve, the photographs in this group were taken in 1931. Key features of these images were nonexistent in 1931. Penguins were not exhibited at the San Diego Zoo until 1933. Alpha the Robot did not appear in the states until late 1934 and was a special attraction in San Diego during the California Pacific International Exposition (1935-1936). Based on this, it is most likely that the images were taken about 1935 during the exposition.
Photograph of several penguins standing in rows in the mirror pool outside the reptile house as they await their feeding at the San Diego Zoo. The edge of the mirror pool stretches across the bottom edge of the frame. Penguins line up in 2 rows at center and are viewed from the side; all face left. A hand holding a fish enters frame at left, and appears to be captured mid-toss. The pool extends back and along the right, where the Reptile House stands. The Reptile House was formerly the International Harvester Building during the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition. It was repurposed and redesigned to be the main entrance and reptile house for the San Diego Zoo. The back side of the building is visible in the background at right. Wire fencing extends along the left edge of the grounds surrounding the mirror pool. Benches dot the exterior perimeter of the fencing. A visitor sits on one of the benches at left. A thicket of trees stands behind the benches at left.
Text from negative sleeve: 1165. San Diego trip 1931. 1. The Fair Grounds. We were with Al Siemsen and Elizabeth. Hebard was along too. 1. Two views of the penguins at the fair. 2. Picture of the Robot walking around. 3 films.
