Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Based on the dates, the boy is more likely Lester Shaw rather than Romayne. Lester and Romayne were William and Josie Shaw's sons. Josie Shaw was Mertie Whitaker's sister and Mertie Whitaker became H. H. West's second wife in the 1920's. H. H. West sits on the beach with Lester Shaw and William Shaw. West wears a hat and has a piece of paper sticking out of his pocket. Lester Shaw looks at West. There is a cardboard box in front of them. William Shaw has his mouth open. He wears a hat and bow tie and holds one hand up to his other wrist. A man and boy walk behind them, the man looking down at the group. There are other people on the beach behind them, as well as a large building with many windows. There is a sign behind them that reads, in part, "surf bathing." Text from negative sleeve: 1236.
