West and Mel Nordlinger sitting at a table and eating while attending the Rubber Men's Picnic in Santa Monica Canyon. The camera looks across a picnic table to where H. H. West and Mel Nordlinger sit. Cups, plates and food sit on the table in the foreground. On the opposite side of the table, H. H. West and Mel Nordlinger sit and are viewed from a low-angle. H. H. sits in partial view along the left edge of the frame. A medal is pinned to his lapel and he looks to the camera. Mel Nordlinger sits to his right. He looks down towards the table as he cuts his food. Another man (partial view) sits next to Mel along the right edge of the image. Tree branches hang down behind the men and in the far distance, a canyon wall stretches across the background. Text from negative sleeve: 1242. Santa Monica Canyon, about 1908. Rubber Mens picnic. 1. Jim Jeffries eating with us. At Jim's right hand is Webb Brain. At Jim's left hand is Bill Newerf, Goodyear agent. Back of Newerf is George Crackel, then with the Goodrich Tire Co. 2. Beer keg on the Water Wagon. Can't know identify the fellows. 3. Vincent Loos, of John T.Bill Co. helping with the barbecue. 4. Leon T. Shettler, with cigar, turing [sic] to look at the camera. 5.
