Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. Photograph of H. H. West's Buick pulling through an opening cut into the trunk of a redwood tree. The tree stump stands in the near distance, right of center. A rectangular gap has been cut into the trunk, allowing for cars to drive through it. H. H. West's Buick drives through the tree trunk and towards the left. It is viewed at an angle from the front and the side. Just its back end remains beneath the tree trunk. In the background, power lines stretch overhead and a few buildings stand at right. Text from negative sleeve: 1619. Yellowstone trip, 1942. Thursday, July 2, 1942. 1. Oregon Caves. Mertie West feeding the chipmunks. 2. H.H.West feeding chipmunks. Left my hat at the lunch room at Cave Junction and was told to get a cap to wear in the caves so as to protect my head from water and bumps of low hanging rocks. Got a souvenir cap at the entrance. 3. Visitors drinking at the water fountain at the entrance. 4. Smith River. Father mentions it. 5. A big redwood stump at Crescent City cut for auto to go thru. I run my Buick in and take a picture of it. 5 films. [Note: In all instances of the year date, 1942, the last digit (2) is handwritten over a typed 3.]
