Photograph of the first house that the family of George M. West lived in when they arrived in Los Angeles. Sichel Street stretches across the foreground. The house stands on the opposite side of the street. A low concrete wall rises from the sidewalk and lines the front yard. The single-story home stands at center. A bay window extends from the right side of the front of the house. A porch stretches across the left side of the front of the house and extends back along the left side of the home. A neighboring house stands in partial view at left.
Text from negative sleeve: 1673. Los Angeles, California. Downey Avenue. 1.2. Two views of the home first occupied by George M. West and family when we came here in 1888. It was No.520 Downey Avenue. Now called North Broadway, and located between what was known as Truman and Hellman streets. (Now Avenue 22 and 24.) It was set back from the Avenue and had some small palm trees in the front yard, and a row of tall cypress trees in front, with an arch over the entrance gate It was moved to the present location on Sichel street near Avenue 26 to make room for the garage. When we lived in it the porch ran across the front only but the porch has since been extended around the side. There was a door from th [sic] right end of the porch to father's office in the front room. My bedroom also, as I slept on a cot in the bay window. (Over) I could hear the rumble of the cable cars as they rounded the curve at Truman street only half a block away. This picture taken May 25,1941 where the house now is, near the corner of North Sichel and Avenue 26, on Sichel street, facing west. 2 films and 1 photograph. The house had its privy at the rear of the lot, next the alley at rear. This privy was covered with a big pink climbing rose bush, and some tall geraniums. Under one of the little palm trees in the front yard was hanging a Mexican olla, with a tin dipper, when I came into the yard for the first time in October 1888.
