Description

Photograph of two houses standing along Avenue 24 (formerly North Hellman Street) where the Cooper, Ambrose and Keyes families used to live. A sidewalk stretches on a steep angle past the lower left corner. The two houses sit back from the sidewalk, to the right. They are viewed at an angle from the north. The Ambrose and Keyes families' former house stands rightmost along the right edge. It is partially obscured by a large palm tree that stands in front of it. To the left of the Ambrose and Keyes house stands the former home of the Cooper family at center. Short, wide pines stand in the front yard of this house. Beyond the former Cooper property, the back of a building is visible in the distance at left. Text from negative sleeve: 1691. Los Angeles, California. North Hellman street, East Los Angeles. Now Avenue 24. 1. 2. Two pictures of the two houses at the alley behind Doc Schloss drug store. The one next the alley occupied by Cooper and the next one by the Keys [sic] and Ambroses, It has been so long, that it may be that when Coopers moved out of the house next the alley, the Ambroses moved in, and the Keys [sic] always lived in the second house. Can't recall now. Should have spelled that name Keyes. These pictures taken in August 1936. Notice how the palm tree has grown since I took Louise Ambrose pictures. 2 films.
