Photograph of Mertie West standing on the north corner of the intersection of Howe and West Georgia Streets in Vancouver. Mertie West stands on a sidewalk corner at center and looks to the camera. Beside her, a traffic light stands on the sidewalk. West Georgia Street enters frame at right and extends back towards center. Behind and to the left of Mertie, a few pedestrians cross Howe Street. Howe Street stretches across the image. Beyond Howe Street, at left, stores line W. Georgia Street and face right. Signs for the stores, from front to back, read, "NEW YO[...] FUR CO[...]," and "Picardy BEAUTY SHOP ENTRANCE 618 HOWE ST." At the intersection and directly behind Mertie, workers perform street maintenance. Along the right edge, in the background, the second Hotel Vancouver stands in partial view. Its entrance porch faces towards W. Georgia St. Another building stands behind it at center.
