Photograph of Mertie West standing on the platform at the Albuquerque railroad station. Mertie West stands in the foreground, just left-of-center, and looks to the camera. She stands on a brick-paved platform that enters frame at left and extends into the distance at right. Behind her, about a dozen other travelers stand or walk along the platform. Directly behind Mertie, a news stand stands. It is viewed at an angle from the side, facing right. Along the top of the building it reads, "NEWS STAND Tre[...] SANDWICHES." A low wall lines the left side of the platform. As it stretches into the distance, trees and other vegetation grow behind it. A small stand with signs reading "WESTERN UNION," stands alongside the wall at left. At far right, train tracks run parallel to the platform. A train is visible sitting on the tracks in the distance.
