Description
Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds. A slightly out-of-focus photograph of the sculpture, "Andrew Jackson," by Clark Mills standing in Lafayette Square in Washington, D. C. In the foreground, a portion of a park lawn and walkway stretch across the image. Beyond it at center, wrought iron fencing encircles the monument to Andrew Jackson. The statue's base stands atop a small, grassy hill. Atop the base, the bronze statue stands. The figure of Andrew Jackson sits atop a horse who rises up on its haunches. With one hand, the Andrew Jackson figure holds onto the reins and with the other he holds his hat up. The sculpture is viewed from the side with the figures facing left. On the ground, 4 cannons face outward as they surround the base, one at each corner. Trees in Lafayette Square stand across the background and the Hay-Adams Hotel peeks through the trees in the distance at left. Four punched holes line the top edge at left. According to the negative sleeve, this set of photographs is captured in color. The scans of these images are in black and white. This photograph was included in a set of photographs taken in New Orleans. This particular statue of General Andrew Jackson appears to be the one standing in Lafayette Square in Washington, D. C., not in Jackson Square in New Orleans. The landscaping and surrounding buildings of the photograph matches the Washington, D. C. location. The Wests also visited Washington, D. C. on the same trip to the eastern United States and Canada. NRHP reference # 70000833 (Lafayette Square Historic District) Text from negative sleeve: 2342.
