Similar photographs appear with the article, "Blazing Skies Defied by Hurrying Crews Digging Big Ditch in Desert," Los Angeles Times, 16 Mar 1936: 10. From the view of the control house, the arm of a gigantic crane extends vertically through the center of the image. Tread marks from construction equipment pass under it. In the near distance at center, a debris cloud rises from the desert floor. The crane's large sand bucket hangs directly above it, appearing to have just released the sand. Beyond the worksite, the desert floor stretches into the distance. A similar photograph of the construction of the All American Canal appears with the caption: “Like some unbelievable monster of the machine age is this enormous dragline working on the all-American canal eighteen miles from Calexico. This view taken from the top of the control house shows the enormous crane that handles the eight-cubic yard sand bucket. The canal cut is sixty feet deep here. In two months this dragline has moved 344,000 cubic yards of sand,” Los Angeles Times, 16 Mar. 1936: 10 Text from negative sleeve: 4973 - Shots at the All-American Canal near xxxxxx Calexico, California.
