Description
Photograph of the William Wolfskill's hacienda, Central Avenue and Fifth Street, Los Angeles, ca.1885-1888. A statue of a naked boy (except for a cloth around his loins) blowing into a conch shell stands in front of an arched pergola supporting a plant. The covered porch stands behind the pergola and a lattice fence is at left. Bushes and flowers edge a paved walkway at right along the front of the porch. It was at this residence that the first California oranges were raised to be shipped to eastern markets. Later it was the site of the Southern Pacific Arcade Depot.
