Los Angeles Airways, founded in 1944, invented the term 'heliport' and was the first company to receive authority to carry mail by helicopter as well as passengers. Photograph caption dated March 17, 1956 reads, "Veteran ex-Marine Corps pilot John E. Dupies is set to throw switch which will start huge rotary blades spinning in space. Pilot Dupies will cross Santa Monica Mountains near Beverly Glen, scanning ground for Liberace's piano-shaped swimming pool which is first ground beacon for aerial route through Valley."; See images #00118428 through #00118434 for all photos in this series.
