Description
Janet Fitch discusses her book, “White Oleander.” She explains that the book follows the protagonist, Astrid, who is the only child of a single mother. Ingrid, Astrid’s mother is an eccentric poet who murders a man for rejecting her. The novel tracks Astrid’s journey as she moves from one foster home to the next. Fitch goes on to discuss her career as a writer and the genesis of the characters in the novel. She confides that she often reads poetry before she writes, because it helps her set a rhythm and a pacing to her work.
