Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Valley Times sponsored contest started on Flag Day, June 14, 1964, at the corner of Parthenia Street and Van Nuys Boulevard, Panorama City, in a Hughes Market parking lot. Robert LeMaire ascended forty feet up a flagpole to a specially built platform where he remained for 36 days before climbing back down on July 20, 1964. Photograph caption dated June 25, 1964 reads, "Valley Times flagpole sitter, Robert LeMaire, has three meals a day hoisted up the flagpole by his personal waiter, James Miner, right, of Hody's, Panorama City. Here Miner explains the procedure to Jay Sanchez, left, general manager of Hody's Restaurants, and Mrs. Mary Hooper, manager of Hody's Panorama City."
