Description
A young woman stands ankle-deep in calm turquoise blue waters in her bathing costume. Her sleeveless costume is of a brown mottled fabric with pink shoulder straps and ribbon tied in a casual bow just below the bust, creating an Empire waist. The bathing costume falls to mid-thigh level. She wears a black bathing cap with brown trim and holds a small gray crab away from her with her right hand. She is placed against a cloudless blue sky and there are brightly colored red hills in the background suggesting she is in a bay or harbor. The strong colors, simple composition, and flat spatial recession suggest the influence of "japonisme," a popular artistic style in France at the turn of the century.
