Description
Photograph article dated April 6, 1960 partially reads, “Situated in a fertile valley surrounded on three sides by high peaks, Hemet - which means 'box' in Indian - had the dubious distinction of being the terminal point for the branch railroad. While other Southern California communities were booming, one Hemet chamber member summed up things with... 'Our sequestered position has doomed our town to abnormal growth.' This problem and the solution that was found for it puts the coming 33rd season of the famed Ramona Outdoor Play in a more important role than entertainment. The pageant has played a key role economically - as well as culturally - in the development of the valley. In the 32 years the play has been staged, more than 700,000 visitors have flocked into Hemet and San Jacinto during Ramona time. The community has become world-famous and an historical landmark in California." Photograph caption reads, "Ramona and Alessandro - Gracing Buick Invicta custom with her beauty is Ramon, [sic] played by Ann Daniels, 23-year-old starlet who will be playing lead role for first time. Standing alongside is Maurice Jara, in part of Alessandro for his ninth year." Buick dealers of Southern California supplied the brand new 1960 Buick Invicta custom convertible pictured in this photograph.; See image #00132070 for additional photo in this series.
