Description
Exhibit panel titled "Reflections: then (by Ralph Merritt) and now (by Shi Nomura)." This panel includes an illustrated title block "Manzanar Concentration Camp," and two text blocks: "Then," excerpts from Ralph Merritt's writings in the Manzanar Free Press and in Our World, the school yearbook. The second text block "Now" was written by Shi Nomura describing his impressions on visiting Manzanar in the 1980s, the memories evoked by Manzanar, and his commitment to the Manzanar Project honoring the relationships made in Manzanar during camp days. Also included on the panel are then and now photos of Administration Housing locations, gardens, and sentry towers. The bottom of the panel has a section on "I Pledge Allegiance," with several photos and news clippings of flag raising and pledging, along with the altered lyrics to the song America: "My country tis of thee, we've lost our liberty." The Eastern California Museum Object ID for this item is 1994.80.189. A collection of panel collages created by Shiro and Mary Nomura, both of whom were incarcerated at Manzanar from 1942-1945, for the Eastern California Museum's Manzanar Project. The panels are comprised of photographs, artifacts, documents, and stories collected by "Shi" starting in the 1970s. Over the following 20 years, the Nomuras assembled more than 75 panels depicting their personal interpretation of Manzanar 'camp' life, major events, history, and site preservation efforts. In each panel Shi and Mary provide valuable first-person documentation from their experiences. These panels have been displayed at various community events, annual Manzanar Pilgrimages, and the Eastern California Museum (the permanent home of the collection).
