Description
In Mark Twain's last decade, his writings took a sharp turn in tone from colorful satire to outright bitterness. People point to the death of his wife and two of his daughters, but as another possible explanation, Pitzer President Laura Skandera Trombley - who in her 1994 book, Mark Twain in the Company of Women - decided to focus on a hidden figure: Isabel Van Kleek Lyon. In Mark Twain's Other Woman (published by Knopf in 2010), President Skandera Trombley describes Twain's relationship with Lyon - who might variously be described as Twain's companion, secretary, and nurse - and how that relationship went from dependency to Twain's furious and public denunciation of Lyon.
