"Maitland: Vor der Kirche (vgl. 9644.), Br. Ernst Dietrich, Prediger, u. rechts Br. Theunissen, der Br. Hettasch u. mich mit seinem Auto herumfuhr. /vgl. "Herrnhut" 1934 S. 172a." ("Maitland: In front of the church (cf. 9644.), Br[other] Ernst Dietrich, preacher, a[nd] [on] [the] right Br[other] Theunissen, who drove Br[other] Hettasch a[nd] myself around in his car. /cf. "Herrnhut" 1934 p. 172a."). The picture shows two men who stand on stairs which lead to the entrance door of a church. Each of them leans against a balustrade on the left and right side of the stairs. Both wear black suits. The one to the right wears a hat. Both men seem to be of African or mixed origin. Behind the men the entrance door surrounded by a white frame. On the left a fence and trees behind it. Written on the card board: "P. Theile 1934."
Cf. photo no. 9644. -- Photo no. 9644 shows the whole church. -- Ernst Stephanus Dietrich (1867, Goedverwacht - 1941, Port Elizbeth) was an assistant techer at the Traning School in Genadendal from 1893 to 1911. He worked in several communities in South Africa West (Genadendal: 1912-1916, 1918, 1936-1938, Elim: 1916-1917, Moravian Hill: 1917, Clarkson: 1917-1918, 1939-1941, Moravian Hope: 1919-1929, 1938, Pella: 1930-1931, Mamre: 1933, Maitland: 1934-1935.) He became minister only at the age of 45 and retired 1935. Otto Gerhard Hettasch was born in 1871 in Clarkson, South Africa. He was of European origin and worked as a missionary in West Himalaya from 1900 to 1911 and then in South Africa West from 1920 to 1964. Hettasch was a teacher at the teachers training school in Genadendal and later worked in Moravian Hill and Elim. He died in 1964 in Belleville, South Africa.
