Description
Image of caricatures of Irish comedian Pat Rooney driving a horse-drawn carriage with a male performer and a female performer as passengers past a crowd of spectators standing before an opera house that carries a flag labeled "Independent Candidate Pat Rooney" towards the White House in Washington, D.C., while caricatures of political figures sit and watch in the lower right foreground (presumably, from left to right, Thomas Nast, John A. Logan, Roscoe Conkling, James Blaine, Benjamin Franklin Butler, and William Tecumseh Sherman); date sheet for a show on October 30, [1884], presumably at the Fulton Opera House in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, pasted to bottom of image.
Probable date based on month and day in date sheet and political figures caricatured who were all Republicans involved in the United States Presidential Election of 1884. A Lancaster, Pennsylvania, newspaper advertised Rooney at the Fulton Opera House on October 30, 1884 (Lancaster Daily Intelligencer, 29 October 1884, page 3). "H.A. Thomas, Lith. Studio, 47 East 12th St. N.Y."--text, bottom right margin. "S. J. T."--text, artist's initials written on barrel, bottom center of image. "Pat Rooney / And his Congress of "Comedy Artist" / The choice of the people the / Presidential Year."-text, bottom left. "Opera House / One Night Only, / Thursday, Oct'r 30"--text, date sheet in bottom margin.
