Description
Wine had become much cheaper in Great Britain after Gladstone, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, lifted the duty on it on April 4, 1862. The author ;a member of the Royal College of Physicians, became intereted in the subject of intemperance and bought inexpensive wine for his own drinking in order to ascertain what the public could buy for a moderate price. Dr. Druit made notes on his drinking experiences and published them in the Medical Times and Gazette. Urged on by his medical brethren, he published those papers in the form of this informative book. In the words of the author ;the object of the book was "to know how far these wines may be useful to the medical practitioner as agents in the restoration of health, and how far they are fit to appear at our tables as part of our ordinary diet." We are told that claret is good for measles, scarlatina and rheumatism. In fact, Dr. Druit thinks so highly of Bordeaux wine as a dinner beverage in place of sherry and port that he remaks: "I say try claret, and you will add ten years toyourpatient's life and to your own fees." Cf. Gabler, p. 80.
