Description
Born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, 10 February 1840, Lewis Spitzer travelled west at the age of 17. He joined a wagon train which led him to Visalia, California in 1860; he immediately began to work in teaming, mining and restaurant keeping. After working various jobs throughout California Spitzer became Deputy County Assessor from 1875-79 and was reelected in 1882 after which he sold his farm and moved to San Jose.
