Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Segment 1 (silent): Man handing out cards to passing motorists, "HELP Solve This Traffic Problem." Cars include VW Beetle. Story reads, "Gilroy service clubs are making an all out effort to ease the weekend traffic problem in their city. Anticipating a mammoth jam-up this evening following the Laguna Seca races, the groups printed 25,000 postcards which they handed to motorists waiting on Highway 101 in downtown Gilroy. The postcards are addressed to the State Highway Commission in Sacramento -- they ask the Commission to take immediate steps to alleviate the problem by constructing a freeway bypass around Gilroy. That stretch of 101 -- about 15 miles of highway between Gilroy and the IBM plant is a major source of congestion at the close of any holiday weekend and most summer weekends. Blame is placed on numerous signals and restricted speed limits in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and San Martin." Segment 2 (silent): Visitors to San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, close-ups of roses in bloom, women wearing scarves over their hair. Script reads, "Mother's Day is the day when families gather together to enjoy new experiences. May of these families turned out for the annual opening of the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden, which traditionally takes place on Mother's Day. Each year thousands pass through the garden gates to view and small the hundreds of varieties of flowers which grow there. Roses of all sizes, shapes and colors will remain in bloom through the summer at the 11-acre park...." Segment 3 (silent): Continuation of Mother's Day story, with visitors milling around the campus of Santa Clara University. "Still other families, many from far off, gathered at Santa Clara University for the annual Parent's Day Celebration. Festivities began early this morning. Included in the day's activities were open house sand campus tours, morning and afternoon mass, and a talent show. For many parents, today's visit to the university their sons and daughters attend was their first. Families walked in all directions while the students pointed out and discussed interesting and important campus landmarks." Segment 4 (silent): Beauty pageant activities, including pageant queen in crown off-stage, contestants behind-the-scenes, baton twirler on stage. Story reads, "Sandy Germaine, a pretty 19-year-old marketing major, is the new Miss An Jose State College. Sandy was crowned at Morris Dailey Auditorium on the Spartan campus. She competed against 11 other coeds for the honor and the chance to represent the college at Miss California competition next month in Santa Cruz. Sandy is a veteran baton twirler and head majorette with the Spartan marching band. In the talent phase of the pageant she performed a series of difficult maneuvers with the baton and a stunning modern dance routine. Sandy is a former Miss Teenage San Francisco, she lives in San Carlos. On hand at the ceremonies were Wendy Lee Douglas, Miss California of 1963 and the pageant's Mistress of Ceremonies, and Michael Cetenich, Miss San Jose State of 1965, who crowned the new royalty. Runners-up in the competition included 19-year old Susan Walker, also of Sn Carlos, Pamela Simmons of Fremont, Rose Marie Harmon, and Anne Ward of Los Altos." Segment 5 (silent): Two college football games, the first played at night (San Jose State), and the second during the day (Santa Clara University). Story reads, "This was alumni weekend at both San Jose State and Santa Clara...last night the Spartan Alumni proved to be too much for the Varsity, as they handed them a stinging 28 to 21 defeat. The Alumni scored two early first period touchdowns, and led 13 to 7 at halftime. They added two more scores in the 2nd half, then hung on for the victory. The game, played before a chilled crowd at Spartan Stadium, marked the first time the Alumni had ever defeated the Varsity... ..This afternoon at Santa Clara, the Bronco Varsity defeated the Alumni 16-6 in their annual battle. The Varsity scored early to lead at half time then added another touchdown in the third quarter to wrap up the ball game. Fullback Tom Kennedy sparked the Varsity attack by scoring twice with runs of 2 and three yards. The Bronco Varsity put on an outstanding performance against what was described as the best Alumni team ever to play in the traditional encounter." 5/8/66 A-D 464
