The Norwegian Seamen's Church, located at 1035 S. Beacon Street and designed by Kemper Nomland, is part of 40 international stations worldwide. It has served the needs of Scandinavian seafarers since 1951 at this location, sharing the languages, culture, traditions and faith. In the past, when a ship took 3 days to unload, it was easier to have contact with the crews. Now that a ship unloads in the space of 6-plus hours, it has become an effort to reach out to the needs of the crews. Whenever a Scandinavian ship passes by the Church, the ship's national anthem is played over the loud speakers. Photograph dated September 2001.
