Description
V1p237c -- v2p152d In PHOTO ALBUM-VAULT: ** fc917.9461 A3, Vol. I, page 237 bottom, Vol. II, page 152 center right. These photographs are contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco." Text written under photo in Volume I: "Attempt to block traffic through street car strike Geary & Kearny." Written to left: "Same picture different caption, see Vol. II, P. 152." Text written under photo in Vol. II: "Preparedness Day Kearny & Market 1916." This could not be the case since streetcars are visible on Market, and no traffic of any kind was permitted on that street during the Preparedness Day parade. This photo, looking south on Kearny towards the intersection of Kearny, 3rd, Geary and Market, shows a crowd of people spilling off the sidewalks with lines of streetcars on both Kearny and Market. A man is seen climbing on the roof of the second car. The caption is not altogether clear. Were the strikebreakers stopping the cars in the middle of the street to block traffic or, more likely, were the crowds of strikers trying to keep the cars from running? The Call Building's lower floors have been remodeled, indictating that this photo is of the 1917 and not the 1907 strike.
