Founded as Hesperian College in 1861 in Woodland, California by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the institution changed its name to Chapman College in 1934 following an endowment by Charles Clarke Chapman. The Los Angeles location, 766 N. Vermont Avenue, is now a parking lot for Los Angeles City College. The college moved to Orange, California in 1954 and was renamed Chapman University in 1991. Photograph caption dated November 22, 1949 reads "Kersey Kinsey, president of the Studio City Chamber of Commerce, points out lay of land to future students of Christian University in hills overlooking Valley. Left to right are Kinsey; Chuck Holloway, of Phoenix; Ramona Lawyer, of Oakland; Clyde Barnes, of San Diego; Mary Ellen Zimmerman, of Tucson, and Dan Woodruff, of San Francisco." The church was never built in the San Fernando Valley.
