Description
The First Christian Church is shown at 2701 N S. in this circa 1924 photograph. The Romanesque structure was built in 1911 at a cost of $30,000. The previous church, located at 16th and L streets, was burned down during the Independence Day holiday of 1910, when its shingle roof was hit with a “sky rocket.” The new building’s architect was E.C. Hemmings, who was responsible for work done on the Hotel Sacramento and the city’s Pioneer Congregational Church. Following the congregation’s growth through the 1920s, the church underwent substantial renovation and expansion in 1928. A Bible school, clubhouse, gymnasium and enlarged auditorium were among the additions.
