Photograph article dated March 24, 1961 reads, "Seaman Dennis Stewart, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney W. Stewart, 3900 Carpenter Ct., Studio City, recently won a place of honor for the picture of his ship he painted, and wound up meeting an admiral too. Stewart gained congratulations from Rear Adm. Draper L. Kauffman when the young seaman overcame a lack of artists' materials and produced the picture of the USS Herbert J. Thomas by using bulkhead paint and awning canvas. The painting was in honor of the ship's visit to Nagasaki. It displayed on the ship's messdeck."
