Description
The warlord Takeda Shingen sits on a deerskin-covered stool wearing an ornate helmet decorated with antlers and flowing white hair; his sword's scabbard is made of tiger skin, and his boots of bearskin. Shingen attempted repeatedly to seize the neighboring province of Suruga, which contains Mt. Fuji, in order to gain access to the sea from his landlocked province of Kai. His stance echoes the shape of the mountain he views; like it he seems firmly rooted to the earth, but he floats on a golden cloud, suggesting the unattainability of his desire. (John Stevenson, "Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Aspects of the Moon.")
