Spectators line up to view Carl Cheng's Santa Monica Art Tool, a cast concrete and steel roller that imprints a relief map of L.A. on the sand titled "Walk on L.A.". The art work was commissioned by the City of Santa Monica Percent for Art program. Ten site-specific works are planned for under-used sections of Santa Monica beach from Ocean Park to the Palisades area, Santa Monica. Photograph caption reads: "Impressive: artist Carl Cheng's 12-ton roller left relief map of L.A. on sand, awing thousands until sea erased it". Photograph dated: March 28, 1988.
