Description
This photo of the California State Automobile Association was taken on Nov. 23, 1942 at the corner of 17th and L streets. Just six years earlier, thieves broke into the building and took the organization's safe, which contained $250. The safe eventually was found under the porch of a home at the corner of 18th Street and Capitol Avenue. A sign identifying this stretch of L street as part of U.S. Highway 99 can be seen on the left side of the picture.
