Key Words: Pomona College, Claremont Colleges, Claremont McKenna College Dr. George Charles Sumner Benson served as the first president of Claremont McKenna College from 1946 until 1969. His grandfather, Charles Burt Sumner, founded Pomona College in 1887. He speaks fondly of Russel Pitzer and describes him as “very gentle, very understanding.” He mentions that his wife wrote a brief history of the first ten years of Claremont Men’s College. He hopes that someone will write a history of the individuals who were influential in the founding of Claremont Men’s College.
