Photograph article dated September 6, 1961 partially reads, "Victor L. Auer of Sherman Oaks likes mirages. It's not that he spends much time on the desert. And the mirages he sees are not Technicolor hallucinations of palm-lines lakes. They are, instead, heat waves, and Auer, 23, 3843 Cody Rd., has parlayed an ability to judge them into the National Small Bore Rifle Championship of the United States. 'You have to read the mirages, the heat waves boiling off the ground, to judge wind speed and direction,' he said. Auer did that well enough to wrest the national title from 700 other competitors when they fired at Camp Perry, Ohio, in August. The triumph was a natural for the blond, cheerful UCLA English language graduate who was junior national champion in 1955, collegiate national champ in 1957 and 1960, and who is the national champion among men in the U.S. armed services." Trophies surround the 23-year-old title holder.
