Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the Loma Prieta Earthquake Ari Morimoto was the Maintenance Services Branch Chief for Caltrans District 4 in San Francisco. In this interview, Morimoto describes his personal earthquake experience in Oakland, CA and what he saw at the Caldecott Tunnel, Highway 24, 580 and exiting at the Powell street exit, driving to the Toll Bridge Administration Building. After arriving at the Toll Bridge Administration Building, he was asked to report to 150 Oak Street in San Francisco. Morimoto then took the Richmond San Rafael Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge to surface streets and describes what he saw on the journey. Once he arrived at Oak Street he had to deal with no power, limited communications to start working on contracts, by preparing Director’s orders and authorizations for funding. Morimoto was also responsible in making sure the paperwork also complied with all Federal and Caltrans requirements. Towards the end of the interview, he offers some suggestions of what could have been done differently.
