Description
Pictured in 1929 is a group of eight hops harvesters at the George Brooks Ranch, near Grant Line Road in Elk Grove. They are, from left to right, Ray Hogaboom, Medina Chalmers, Edna Hunter, J.J. “Pop” Nix, Stella Spiva, Arthur “Bud” Chalmers, and Jim Hunter. The man on the far right is unidentified. Behind the group are stands of hops; in front are baskets of hops. The 1933 repeal of the 18th Amendment, also referred to as Prohibition, was a boon to Sacramento hops growers, with prices per pound increasing by nearly 20 percent. At around the time this photograph was taken, hops producers from Elk Grove to Fair Oaks were readying themselves for what was seen to be an imminent repeal of Prohibition.
