Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the Loma Prieta earthquake, Ruth Fernandez was an Assistant Bridge Engineer with Caltrans out of the Sacramento 30th and R Street location. Her inspections of bridge structures, including the Cypress Structure, 980-880 Connector and University Avenue in Berkeley. Most of her time during the days after the earthquake she assisted in documenting the damage around the Cypress structure. Fernandez also worked on the team that was responsible for bringing the Cypress structure down after the earthquake. The Loma Prieta earthquake was a major disaster for the Bay Area, and the work of the Bridge Engineers assisted with the recovery and rebuilding of the region.
