Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. This recording is the Loma Prieta oral history of Richard "Slick" Graves. At the time of the Loma Prieta earthquake Graves was a Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator with Caltrans at the Santa Maria Maintenance Station. After the earthquake happened his supervisor called and told him that his crew would be going to Gilroy the next morning. Graves spent his time on Highway 152 to remove rocks from the highway using a loader. There were three different landslides on the highway that had to be cleared. Then his crew filled all the cracks on the highway pavement. This recording gives details on how highways and roads were cleared after the Loma Prieta Earthquake.
