The city of Hemet is in the San Jacinto Valley in Riverside, California. One of the city's claims to fame has been “The Ramona Outdoor Play,” formerly known as “The Ramona Pageant,” an outdoor play based on Helen Hunt Jackson’s novel Ramona. Held in the Ramona Bowl, an outdoor amphitheater, the pageant is the longest running outdoor play in the United States. It has run uninterrupted except in 1933 during the Great Depression, and in 1942 during World War II. In 1993 it was declared California’s official State Outdoor Play. Photograph caption dated April 15, 1958 reads "Right, are Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Gilman, buzzing around golf course in electrical cart. Mrs. Gilman is vice president of Ramona Pageant and works diligently in its yearly production. Resort features moderate prices for family vacationers in setting of utmost beauty and charm."
