Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the Loma Prieta Earthquake, Charlie Troglio was a Senior Right-of-Way Agent in the Appraisals office based out of the Van Ness Street location in San Francisco. In his interview he recounts his experience with the earthquake, beginning with the moment it struck when he was in the parking garage of the Van Ness building. After the earthquake Charlie was sent to survey damage to Caltrans property. He also discusses his work with Right-of-Way, particulary issues pertaining to Route 17 in Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, including obtaining Right of Entry in order to deposit dirt from landslides (such as the Laurel Canyon Landslide) on to private properties.
