CORAL THE ACH EDITION U BARNACLE Arts and Letters HE OF THE BiG CANC by Mary McCarthy According to the Smithsonian i army of Coral Beach, came from Missou ian word meanir rfe or the Big Canoe". Earle, the one-man e ever stayed at Coral Beach you know that Earie is "He of the Big Canoe"/ of the big hands, of the big shouldres, of the big never-ending job. Earle hasn't big ears and he hasn't * learned to bray yet, though he may someday—anything is possible at Cora! Beach-but in many respects he resembles the famous mules of his native state. The Missouri mule is renowned for its capacity for hard work, and its ability to endure abuse. Earle does everything from moving ^sailers in.and out, to finding little Johnny's nickel whistle. Like the mule, again ,he is extraordinarily patient—but one day rebelled. All day long he had worked hard, listened to complaints, given advice, answered questions. Out of the waves he had fished too aclventurous.toddlers, mended trailer steps, dug an inebriated gentlemen's car out of the sand, straightened out recalcitrant zippers on tent doors, separated fighting dogs,.etc.. All day long too, he had run his legs off in anewanswer to the theme-song of Coral Beach "Send for Earle"! until a bystander exclaimed "By golly, I'll bet if a woman was having a baby, they'd say 'Send for EarleT'. Patient, courteous, always smiling that grand smile of his, he did everything asked of him., But suddenly an awful hush fell over Coral Beach. The tenants, now all feeling strangely helpless and deserted gathered in groups, murmuring: "Gee! Earle must have left us—no one can find him."But Earle hadn't left, he was standing in front of his good-looking wife, Betty, pounding the kitchen table with his fist. "HI be danged! danged! danged!", he roared, "I'm quitting! I've stood a lot, I've done all the crazy things trailerites have asked of me and trailerites ask for things the Almighty ain't even heard of, but tonight I've reached my limit!" "What were you asked to do, Earle?" Betty asked in that nice, soft, slow voice of her. ."Blankety-blank-blank it!", he yelled, "the woman in trailer fourteen just asked me. to help her make a batter for a cake!" But he didn't quit—and are we glad? ove Earle. Come up and meet hirn sometime. A, 94- :h From The Crest Of A Wave. A unique campfire arrangment was originated and ingeniously managed by Billie Palmer while she was a guest at the Coral Beach Trailer Camp. This camp is in the heart of the movie colony managed by W. W. Madge - that well known sea-going person who, for many years, successfully handled the life guard work of a considerable section of the Pacific Coast.Billie Palmer previously handled this same sort of socal work for the beautiful National Monument in Death Valley. Mrs. Palmer regrets that because of urgent business calling her to the East she regrets will not be able l close the season this year for the children of Cora! Beach. But the "shells" of the club wan to express their appreciation, their affectionats appreciation, in the first edition of the Malibu Barnacle. Every Saturday night from seve eight Billie Palmer, called "Death Valley Billie" by the children, held combination weenie roasts and costume parties. Every sort of game was played around the glowing, campfires while she told them stories of Death Valley and even more interesting stories of her trips into the arid sections of the country where no other white woman had set foot before. . . Desolate spos towhich even yet, no roads lead Childrenriding in trailers frim every state in the union, sas around herb Saurday night Bilie Palmer camp fires in this lovely trailer camp which is located right on the edge of the sparkling ocean. The most interestng othese campfire parties was "The Days of 49". All the children came in costumes repreentimg the various characters of the old roistering days of the West. And many a friendship, among the adults, was warmly toasted by the flames from those fires Prizeswere awarded for the best costumes and for skill in the various games. It wont be long before this isea will become nationallyaccepted for the children, wherever trailerites park their modern caravans. * A little rule of courtesy at Corai Beach You'll find it's a good thing to be fair And keep a bright and cheerful air About the place and not to show Your neighbors just how much you know. Whatever any neighbor did I'd try and keep my temper hid And never let him spread along The word that 1 had done him wrong. - ' Wheeler Inn Coral Beach Trailer Camp is regularly inspected by the County Health Department. Help us to keep it clean and sanitary. I he managament requests thatparents instruct their children to put waste paper in the proper containers. Toilet paper isi supplied for childrens or adult use as towels or seat covers or floor mats.
